ABOUT THE FRIENDS OF HYLTON DENE

In 1992, with funding from the Sunderland City Challenge, a group of people from within the community planned to improve the local area known as Hylton Dene that had, for many years, deteriorated into an unauthorised tipping site and vandalised to an extent that it became a no-go area for the majority of the community.

In the October of 1999 the Friends of Hylton Dene group was formed by residents of the estates around Hylton Dene with the aim of co-operating with Sunderland City Council, Durham Wildlife Trust and other agencies to actively involve the local community in the development and upkeep of Hylton Dene and Castle.

Planning Grant for Development of Hylton Castle and Dene

The Friends of Hylton Dene and Castle in the Community have submitted an application to the Heritage Lottery Fund to repair and restore the Castle and rejuvenate its historic setting.

In order to do this we need to hear the views of local people and groups who value and use the site. By following the link below and completing this questionnaire you can help to shape the future of the proposed project, and tell us if you would like to be involved in the project in the future.

The Heritage Lottery Fund has awarded funding of £50000 to Castle in the Community, which incorporates Friends of Hylton Dene, for a Project Planning Grant

The Group have had a vision and ambition to develop and enhance Hylton Castle, St Catherine's Chapel and the Dene to its full potential for the community. The Castle is the second oldest building in Sunderland and it is the Groups belief that developing it into a building that can be used will help preserve and maintin it for future generations.
,br> The Dene is a natural woodland covering 200 acres which currently provide pleasant walks.it is believed to be possible to utilise and adapt the area so that there could be activities and attractions which will give improved leisure and recreation facilities for young and old.

The work to be covered by the Grant is the first steps in an exciting journey to define what is possible with the buildings and site. The Sunderland City Council and English Heritage have assisted and supported the Groups application to the Heritage Lottery Fund. They will be part of the process of the consultation and commissioning of the five elements at work.

The objective of the Project Development is to build up a scheme which makes the best use of the resources and can be proved to all partners to have an acceptable financial basis. Achieving this is essential to attract further funding and investment before the actual development can take place...
